Iceland’s Skogafoss is one of the most impressive, and photographed, waterfalls in Iceland. Famously powerful, I always wanted to portray it under different conditions, for a truly unique image. For that, I had to go in the dead of winter, hoping for a day when the waterfall was almost frozen, and the flow drastically reduced.

Photographing Skogafoss in the middle of winter is hard. The cold cuts you in half, the wind makes it difficult to keep your lens clean of spray which, in turn, would freeze on your glass. But, perseverance is key, and I finally managed to get the image I envisioned.

Compositionally, this image is based upon leading lines zigzagging and pointing towards the waterfall, framed on a backdrop of frozen rocks.
