My name is Maurits Cornelis Escher, but I am more commonly known as M.C. Escher. I was born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands on June 17th, 1898. Though I did not have a particularly happy childhood, it was during this time that my interest in graphic design and art developed.

Growing up in the Netherlands, I always had a passion for drawing. As a child, I was fascinated by the way that shapes and patterns could be combined to create something new and beautiful. It was this interest that ultimately led to my career as a graphic designer and artist.

My family encouraged me to pursue my passion and I enrolled in the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem when I was just 16 years old. During my time there, I studied architecture, geometry, calligraphy, and graphic design. It was during this period that I developed an interest in tessellations – creating intricate designs with repeating patterns. This became my primary focus when it came to art and design.

After graduating from the academy, I travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East; visiting places such as Spain, Italy, Syria and Egypt - all of which provided me with inspiration for my art.

In 1941, I moved to Switzerland where I continued to create works of art until the end of my life in 1972. Throughout this period, my work gained worldwide recognition and admiration. My works are now featured in museums around the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and The National Gallery in London.

Though I am no longer alive today, my works continue to inspire people across generations and cultures alike. To this day, people marvel at the beauty and complexity of my pieces - something that only someone with a passion for art can truly appreciate.
