What do bushfires and surfing have in common? In the second half of 2019, Australia's east coast and inland bushland was on fire for nearly six months straight. This meant that thick smoke travelled thousands of kilometres and hung around for months. Breathing was difficult and going outdoors was mostly avoided.
Surfers everywhere soldiered on, including myself. My daily ritual of capturing images at sunrise was made difficult by the thick clouds of toxic smoke, limiting both breathing as well as the usual golden light reaching the shore.
There were a few days during this time where I was able to capture magic. The rising sun was engulfed in a beautiful hazy cloud, that created these incredibly surreal, diffused pastel colours and gradients.
Getting these images and then paddling out for some waves was hard, however, not doing it was harder. I am grateful I made the choice to get after it in these conditions, as we then entered lockdown shortly after this bushfire event.
This image will forever serve as a reminder to do the things that give you strength and peace, no matter the circumstances and to always be grateful for the chance to do so.
