The laws of nature. The circle of life.
There are many words used to describe a fishing ecosystem. From afar, this law may seem brutal to many. But that is the rule of nature.
The Kızılırmak Delta, which is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Tentative List, is the only wetland on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. The region, whose natural features are largely preserved, is also known as Bird Paradise. Living environments such as sea, river, lake, dune, reed, swamp, forest, and agricultural areas coexist in a healthy ecosystem. Reeds, fish, birds, buffaloes, horses, insects, and all other living things have formed a perfect ecosystem here. In this wet environment, there are dozens of lakes of various sizes, depending on the season. Various fish species in the lake invite hundreds of bird species to this paradise. Lake fishing is also one of the most important livelihoods of the local people.
During the fishing season in this region, many fishermen camp around the lake and are on alert 24 hours a day. They patrol their boats, walk in shallow waters when necessary, and track fish. When the time is right, they scatter their nets in the cold waters. When skill and luck combine, fish are caught in nets in front of the unique view of the sunset. It becomes food for fishermen, their families, and the local people.
In this beautiful paradise, from the creature at the bottom of the food chain to the creature at the top, they feed each other in unity. At sunset, the life of one living creature becomes life for another living thing.
The most beautiful part of this ecosystem is to give power to others. This is the power of being together.
CURATOR NOTE
I’ve seen many beautiful fishing photographs. This one especially so. I’d never thought of them in the context of TOGETHER. Yet, the fishing food chain and ecosystem which feeds vast portions of our planet, both human and animal, is the perfect example of together.
THE ARTIST
Emre Bostanoglu was born in 1986 in Istanbul. He has been photographing since 2009. In 2012, he won the Bronze medal award at the FIAP Club World Cup. He opened many personal and joint photography exhibitions. He was the Founding President of the Photography and Culture and Art Association (FOKUS). He won the grand prize at the Sille National Invited Photography Competition in 2013, to which he was invited, and won the title of Photographer of the Year in Sille. He has the titles of EFIAP, CR2, and SSS/B, which are internationally valid in the field of photography. He has more than 300 Awards in National and International Photography Contests. He served as a judge in more than ten National/International Photography Contests. He has three published books. He directed four short films. He actively continues to work on photography, short films, education, documentaries, and books.
More than two dozen photographers, a dozen countries, an age range of nearly 40 years (possibly more, but some won’t tell), multiple languages, and varied styles. Our team consists of members from around the world. We include photographers from Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, India, Italy, Northern Ireland, Russia, Spain, Turkey, and the United States.
What could possibly bring this diverse group together? There’s only one thing in the world strong enough to do that: a deep love for photography.
Our collective was formed on the intentional basis of being DIFFERENT - different artists with different backgrounds, different races, languages, ability/disability, ages, and genres.
When the theme was announced there was a collective sigh, literally heard round the world. In all honesty, the theme of TOGETHER presented a challenge to nearly every single person on the team. From landscape, travel, nature, astro, portrait, fine art, urbanscape, and conceptual photographers, we’ve all literally spent the past two years ALONE.
World conditions have left everyone in isolation. The thought of “TOGETHER” was at the same time refreshing and terrifying. A few members panicked, some laughed, some left, most cringed at the thought. But in the end, the theme of TOGETHER has brought us TOGETHER.
We’ve dug through our archives, shot new images, edited like crazy, and shared critiques. Then we went back and started all over again!
This collective is the labor of our love, created with laughter, fun, and friendship. With our members spread over at least a dozen time zones, meetings were sometimes varied, crazy, and broken into smaller parts depending on the parts of the world. When you think about that accomplishment alone, accomplished with a bunch of creatives no less, you realize the depth of the loyalty to the project, to the team, and to each other.
Long late nights filled with love, laughter, jokes, craziness, and support have been the backbone of this project since the beginning.
For members of the team who are just beginning their NFT journey, it is an honor to be included with seriously talented photographers, who have been secretly discovered to be just normal people. We are all photographers but we don’t act like competitors. The community and support have been the stuff of legends. We want everyone to make it. Together as a team, we have been able to celebrate victories, face challenges, share as we have won awards, been represented by galleries, sold limited edition fine art prints, and are helping ensure everyone on our team is kicking it in the NFT world.
Through it all there is one common theme: every single member shares the same passion for photography. When asked what the best part of our team is, one member replied, “Love, kindness, love, happiness, love!”
Or, as they say in Ireland, the craic!
