Story:

The Night Dancer - A light painting piece created as part of my ongoing collection - "Glow". This piece was created with my partner at local woodlands not far from where we live. We first discovered the standalone tree during our weekly walks during one evening. As my partner stood next to the tree, I could see her silhouette figure contrasting against lights emitted from the nearby town behind her in the background, that's when an idea came into my mind.

We came back the next day with the light painting equipment - drone with LED light and a light tube, with the idea of creating some light art at the lone tree. The process of the shoot took many attempts and some trial and errors to get it right, as it was impossible to control the drone, press the camera shutter on the tripod as well as performing light painting behind my partner. So, I had to program the drone so that it flew automatically and then I had to set the camera to time-lapse mode. After all that, I had to ran 100m or so behind my partner, who was very patience, to perform light painting with the light tube, all of those had to be timed perfectly.

We attempted many times, with every attempts there were many failures and there were some "almost there" photos. As we continue to trial and error, running back and forth to see what we have captured on the camera screen, we eventually arrived closer to a result where we were happy with. After burning through the three drone batteries I brought with me, we called it a day and went home to look through the photos on a bigger screen. From all the photos captured that night, this piece was the one that I was most pleased with. It showed a silhouette of a women dancing next to a tree with halo ring glowing above it, while the circle light trail behind the women made her looked like she possessed some kind of special aura. All of these combinations made for a fascinating story behind this piece.

Glow by Manfred Teh collection image

Glow is a collection that are consisted of 16 1/1 light painting with a drone at night over the last 3 years of my photography journey. Another 16 pieces will be added once the collection has sold out.

Throughout my photography journey, light has been one of many theme that has inspired me. Whether it's day or night time photography, both offers different looks and feelings from the same location. Over the years, I have developed a fondness for night photography, we can dictates how a scene would look like and the feelings that it can evoke by either using just natural light source or artificial light source to capture a scene and create a story that the we want to portray.

Created in my signature style, "Glow" focuses on exploring how both natural light source and artificial light source can both co-exists in natural outdoor environments (with or without man-made structure) and combined together to create something that is out of this world and that us, human don't normally see.
