In 1974, the most powerful broadcast ever intentionally beamed into space was from Puerto Rico. The transmission was part of the celebrations held to mark the upgrade of the Arecibo radio telescope. The transmission consisted of a simple, pictorial message addressed to our putative cosmic companions in the globular cluster M13. This cluster is about 21,000 light-years from us, near the edge of the Milky Way, and contains about a third of a million stars.
