My inspiration for this particular piece, is the sentiment of perseverance in the midst of being drowned out; of falling into the shifting tides created by the inundation of content & information across the web. Striving to pierce through the flood of rap music that drones in familiar tones. Hoping, praying to be heard by those who still seek the soul, introspection, & catalytic growth that can come from profound Hip-Hop.
I lyrically affirm my presence in this space as a HipHoppa & Lyrical Performing artist, despite not being at the forefront of the culture. There is purpose & meaning in the art that I create & share with the world, no matter how many people actually hear it. If a tree falls in the forest, the energy still disperses. Yet & still, I call out on this song for those who actually do hear me, & make a request to let their presence be known.
I utilize the techniques of lyrical writing, poetry, figurative language, rhyme & philosophy in the spoken word elements of this piece. Utilizing rhetorical questions that beg for genuine answers, I ask, “How can we change without seasons?”, acknowledging that change is the only constant & that it is as natural as the seasons themselves, while also giving meaning to the dark times that we endure. I ask, “Why do we shame without seeing the other side of other lives?”, making a request that we put ourselves not just into someone else's shoes, but to earnestly attempt at seeing the world as they see it through their perspective — given the circumstances that have molded them & the trials that they may have endured alone; unbeknownst to the rest of the world.
I speak of the emergence of this new paradigm that we are stepping into, & ask that service is top of mind. I believe that artists living in their purpose & creating their art from a genuine place is the greatest service they can provide.
I acknowledge growth & self-reflection, while encouraging that we allow ourselves to move in states of flow, rather than trying to force things into being. I call out to your awareness of the light within, the guiding intuitive presence that can be our source of stillness, clarity, peace & direction.
On the music production side, I utilized sounds from Splice & Logic Pro X to compose the instrumental, capturing the melodic structure with my xKey Air 25 Keyboard, then finger drumming the percussive elements using my Novation Launchpad Pro (MK3). The hardworking Glassy Music helped with mixing down the track. Larry of COS Mastering followed up with the final master of the song which I then took & synced to the video component; after fine-tuning it one last time to my liking.
The video was shot at Studio6480 in Atlanta, GA, by the talented Shan Warren. The set design was mostly in place when we decided it would serve as an adequate stage for the performance, as the primary focus was intended to be the delivery of the performance itself & the visual lyrics. The scene absolutely added to the overall presence & aesthetic.
I made this piece because I truly feel that Hip-Hop & this form of lyrical 'wordsmithing', is an art worthy of being acknowledged in high regard. The lyricism in & of itself IS the art. The choice in delivery, the intonation, the alliteration, the cadence, the rhythm, the selective silence, the poetry, the message.
For me, this song & lyrical performance captures the resilience of my roots & purpose in music, that was inspired since birth, nurtured in youth, cultivated in adulthood & galvanized by my strivings for meaning in this life. I had often “played the 2nd fiddle” growing up, downplaying my worthiness, offering up what could have been mine to someone else who seemed like they wanted it more, not caring for the limelight. I kept to myself not wanting to be a burden to others, making myself small to give space to another's glory. In this song, I declare that I am not this burden I've perceived myself to be. That my voice has meaning; that my life has meaning, & that the art that I share, the music I create can touch lives, inspire, and be impactful.
