The Toi Market is a seemingly limitless grid of narrow alleyways featuring produce stalls and secondhand vendors. It was a point of interest for us to see, as it represents the last step on the fast fashion lifecycle, starting in North America and Europe before either selling here or turning definitively into trash. Oftentimes what the developed world considers clothing ‘donation’ is instead an easy way to offload waste obligations, with the end result being landfill issues and stifled industry in less developed nations. There were several instances where I wanted an article of clothing but held off as the sizing wasn’t quite right. Wearing the garment once or twice only to dispose of it later seemed antithetical to the point of visiting.
