Just 7 kilometers south of Nairobi’s city center is Nairobi National Park, a veritable cornucopia of wildlife activity. Here we saw zebras, giraffes, hippos, water buffalo, all manner of antelope and countless bird species. Our most fortunate sighting was a pair of white rhinos, distinct from their black rhino cousins in their larger forehead and square mouths. Most recent estimations have the southern white rhino population between 19 and 21 thousand. Only 2 northern white rhinos are known to exist: both females living in captivity.
