Bactaerials - Prototypes against anxiety is an experimental series in which something different happened than I expected, a kind of analogue 'glitch'. In neurodivergence there are various types of comorbidities, one of which is GAD, “generalized anxiety disorder”, something I’ve had to work on over the years and which, also through the creation of artistic rituals, I’ve managed to control. In this ritual, the aim was to photograph once a week the growth of a colony of bacteria inside a Petri dish (nothing dangerous of course), but due to a mistake I made in closing it, air entered and condensed, creating the bubbles in these works. The unintended result was so fascinating that I photographed these air bubbles with a macro lens over the weeks. The choice of colours is a slight provocation: there is a tendency to compare the autistic spectrum to the visible spectrum of light, a symbolism that is much debated in the autistic community and can sometimes be a simplistic representation of the condition. In this case, the colour spectrum is meant to represent human neurological biodiversity as a whole, and not just the autistic condition alone. The last work, number 8, represents darkness and light and the binary view we tend to have when talking about these issues. It is in the shades of grey that the most important answers lie. Macrophotography | Nikon D750, Nikkor 105mm 2.8, edited in Tone Curve in Lightroom+PS, PNG 4000x4000
