"The Meltdown Chronicles: a collective expericens". The term Meltdown is used to describe the sudden outbursts of uncontrolled, out-of-context anger that can occur in some autistic persons. During a Meltdown, the excess energy of the autonomic nervous system leads to a loss of behavioural control and an inability to calm down. It is very similar to a computer crashing because it can no longer handle too many programs open. It’s the body that requires this effort, an involuntary process that is often the cause of mockery or incomprehension by those around, which as a consequence causes shame towards one's own functioning and autistic condition.
This series of sketches, the result of a more in-depth work that I will publish in the coming months, are an artistic reworking of the meltdown concept aimed at destigmatising this type of manifestation in social contexts. A collection of frescos representing imaginary and mystical collective meltdowns, the result of an environmentally induced overload, which puts the entire society under pressure, not only the neuroatypical population (which suffers from it in a different way), and which calls for a progressively greater performance in terms of ableism.
