Bagels On Bartow - 3.83/5
Store
Fairly small storefront. Behind the staff you can see the guts of the operation - a slight plus aesthetically and a major reassurance of freshness. The employees joke with each other and seem happy, all younger staff. Fast service. Not a ton of auxiliary items available for purchase. Efficient overall.
3.75/5
Bagel
A large and tall bagel. Airy and fresh but not hot. A crunchy, crusty underside - a plus. One-sided, standard toppings at good density. Occasional flecks of salt at decent visual ratio. Unfortunately the salt doesn't play much in the taste, holding this one back from true upper tier status. That said, a strong option for a neighborhood store.
4/5
Cream Cheese
Served cool. Good application and amount. Fresh for sure, but just a tad glommy. Some texture play from the scallion but not a huge presence. It's on the right side of the line for every metric, but the fact that the line is visible means something. Would be better a little warmed up, but toasting this particular bagel would take away its strongest attributes.
3.75/5
The definitive bagel survey of New York City. 202 bagels reviewed across all five boroughs, with notes of distinction given to the best stores, spreads and bagels. http://everythingiseverything.nyc/
The collection is part one of "Post Clarity," a 5-part NFT series documenting "2020: Total Clarity" by creative duo Highley Varlet. During "Total Clarity," artists Mike Varley and Jessi Highet walked 260 marathons and 7,000 miles around the five boroughs of NYC over one calendar year. https://highleyvarlet.com/
