Gotta Getta Bagel - 4.33/5
Award: Store of Note
Store
Rectangular shaped store, funneled for swift ordering but not cramped. Moderate, standard drink selection to the right, flawless deli case / bagel display to the left, with bagels clearly labeled in bins that are pleasingly functional. The functional aesthetic continues below, with all the spreads and fish one could want in metal kitchen bins under clean white industrial light. Classic Rock on the radio, Q 104.3. Framed, yellowed posters of bagels adorn the wall, next to simple yet substantial menu signage that matches the aesthetic of the bagel bins. A fast bagel staff of three women and one man, not unfriendly but matter of fact. A standard selection of pastries. In terms of amenities and aesthetics, the Platonic ideal of bagel stores. Just missing that 'je ne sais quoi' of a perfect score.
4.75/5
Bagel
Medium-large bagel. Toppings on both sides, bald in some spots but great density to compensate. Standard toppings plus a great salt crystal ratio. Stiffer than I'd like but still fresh. A very light crispness. The toppings take this bagel far.
4.25/5
Cream Cheese
Confetti-style scallion spread, served deli case chilled. Slightly less application than I'd like, but clearly professional.
4/5
The definitive bagel survey of New York City. 202 bagels reviewed across all five boroughs, with notes of distinction given to the best stores, spreads and bagels. http://everythingiseverything.nyc/
The collection is part one of "Post Clarity," a 5-part NFT series documenting "2020: Total Clarity" by creative duo Highley Varlet. During "Total Clarity," artists Mike Varley and Jessi Highet walked 260 marathons and 7,000 miles around the five boroughs of NYC over one calendar year. https://highleyvarlet.com/
