The Scandinavian Defense is the closest us humans will ever get to an unbeatable opening. Many openings such as a Caro-Kann, French, and in many instances Sicilian aim to get their pawn to d5 with prepatory moves. But why delay d5 when you can push it turn 1? The Scandinavian Defense more commonly known as the Scandi is the perfect mix between defense and offense. It combines the attacking ideas of great players like Mikhail Tal and Shirov off the first move! It gets defensive ideas from its little brother the Caro-Kann with the e6+c6 pawn constellation. This pawn structure has been used by the best positional players such as Karpov, Magnus Carlsen, and Martin Heider. In fact, the Scandi was used in the first ever recorded chess match. Unfortunately it lost and we have never recovered from that. Do not base your judgment off 1 game! Luckily for us, in recent years a man by the name of John Bartholomew brought us a beacon of hope. His kindness and understanding of chess allowed us to play the Scandinavian in a safe place. The Scandinavian Defense has been employed in even the highest levels such as the game 2014 Magnus Carlsen vs Fabiano Caruana. Even the legendary Gata Kamsky has used the Scandi with a stunning record of +5-2=5. I can go on and on about the Scandi being used at the top levels but I will get straight to the point. To play the Scandi you must not only understand chess. You must understand life. The Scandi cannot be played with great finesse without integrity, honesty, and courage! Without these key ingredients you will surely lose! If you lack these traits you might as well play the French or London. The Scandi is a lifestyle and a great one at that. You know I had a girlfriend before I started playing the Scandi. She went crazy because I was explaining over and over again that the only thing keeping us together is 1. e4 d5. All in all, I would do it again and lose the love of my life. Cus at the end of the day the only thing that matters is 1. e4 d5.
