All kind of trees, and forests, cover yet a significant surface of the lands of the planet Earth. Currently remain an estimated 40 million square kilometers or a 31% percentage. Since millions of years they had been a key part of life in Earth, and a basic resource for human life and civilizations. Trees and forests play a central role in the terrestrial ecosystem, like in the oxygen, water, carbon, and soil cycles in the planet. Their importance is even greater in the current climate emergency. But even if the climate crisis don’t existed, the scale of deforestation by itself is an existential menace to human civilization. A new scientific research evaluated the probability of avoiding the self-destruction of our civilization having into account only the current rate of deforestation. The staggering and scary result of the evaluation: “Based on the current resource consumption rates and best estimate of technological rate growth our study shows that we have very low probability, less than 10% in most optimistic estimate, to survive without facing a catastrophic collapse.” Besides deforestation is one of the leading causes of climate change and species extinction. We must be aware that trees, specially old-growth, are crucial to fighting climate change. The conservation and restoration of ecosystems that soak up carbon are natural climate solutions at hand that can contribute to mitigate the climate change.
