Social media has made us all so accustomed to following each other, following our idols and icons, and accepting “truth” from people that we admire. What we don’t tend to realize is that so much of the information we receive from others is merely conjecture, and not necessarily facts. It’s human nature to want to be a beacon of knowledge, because it makes us feel powerful, regardless if we convey facts or not. This has historically been the case with politicians, however, with the advent of social media, anyone can have a platform. I always think of the phrase my dad told me, “If your friend jumped off a bridge, would you do it? Probably not, but if thousands of people were doing it for the prospect of financial freedom, I might be persuaded. Social media’s bizarre power of mass-persuasion is the underlying narrative of this piece.
