Diana, is inspired by "Diana and Her maidens", an 1898 painting by Edward Robert Hughes.
In Ovid's version of the Metamorphosis poem, a hidden lake appears in the wooded valley of Gargaphie. There, Diana, the goddess of the woods, bathed and rested after a hunt. Actaeon, a young hunter, accidentally witnessed the bath of the goddess. In retaliation, Diana splashed him with pool water, cursed him, and transformed into a deer.
