The woman for whom the home of the US Open is named, Billie Jean King captured four singles titles at this event, part of her 12 career major crowns. All told, King won a total of 13 titles here, in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Six times between 1966 and 1974 she was the No. 1-ranked player in the world. The Hall-of-Famer has long used her platform as a champion to champion those causes in which she believed, allowing her to transcend the sport and become a true American icon.
