Subilo (‘hope’) is the older statesman of the bunch. Arriving in North Luangwa National Park as a confident 12-year-old bull, he was ready to take on the world. He exerted his dominance, butting other bulls to the edges and siring multiple calves with his harem of females. As black rhinos go, he’s one of the best – sweet and mild during translocation but a tough rhino to track and monitor, with a reputation for being a little grouchy (look carefully behind that eyeglass!) His pink bow tie is an indication of his suave and sophisticated nature.
