The inspiration for this piece comes from the experience of a young girl struggling with her own body image. She lives in a society that has set standards of how she should look that does not accurately represent the diversity of women that make up the true beauty of the world. She stands staring at her reflection and what she sees are versions of herself that do not accurately represent her. The monster represents society and the many tentacles that force her to keep staring at the reflection it has helped create.
The "Monsters Inside Me" project is inspired by my personal experience with mental health which also include my experiences in the emergency room working with children that suffer from mental illness throughout the pandemic. Each piece highlights a different aspect of mental health and is aimed to open dialogue surrounding each topic. I hoped that by expressing my own journey I might resonate with others who have similarly faced mental health illness or have loved ones who have. 10% of the profit will be donated to “The Mind Deconstructed” a non-profit charity affiliated with The University of Minnesota aimed at raising awareness about mental health. The money will go towards research and to support their podcast that raises awareness about mental health.
