In 2008 professional surfer, rockstar, and friend Donavon Frankenreiter was asked to be guest editor of Surfer Magazine.

He called me up and asked if I'd be interested in drawing an old-school style flipbook animation for the corners of the magazine. Without hesitation, I agreed and got to work.

I hadn't done a flipbook since grade school but the challenge seemed so fun that I got to work immediately to meet the short deadline.

I had no idea what I got myself into. I drew each of the over 80 frames by hand in Photoshop using a drawing tablet and overlaying each movement layer by layer. It was super tedious, but the result came out so sick.

When I was done, I sent it off to the publisher and in the November 2008 issue with the headline reading "Let's Get Weird" on the cover, my flipbook animation was sent out globally.

With a flip of the pages, surfers around the world were watching my little surfer dude get tubed.
