Images of Self Portraits - Andy Warhol The artist who brought common reproduction to Fine Art. Warhol used photography, Polaroids, film, print, screen print and paint. He also made a lot of self portraits. He got other people to make his work. Andy loved the culture of celebrity and life as art. Andy would have loved NFTs, crypto, Beeple and all that, calling it ‘cool’. He would probably have NFT-ed his signature and minted an edition of a million.
The common criticism of NFTs is ‘well I can just right click and save as’. Who actually does actually that? Why would you and if you do what are you getting?
Well I did. I searched for loads of images of paintings, right clicked and saved as; and then overlayed them into a composite. I kept the crop, frame, chromatic aberration, resolution; lens curvature, vignetting, people in front queuing, the memes, the low res. file format - it’s all in there.
The fact is, in the 21st century, many of us experience images on screens more than on walls and don’t visit galleries. Originals are relatively pointless, they’re something we’re unlikely to see in the flesh and even less likely to own.
This is a new set of occasional works made from found images, copies of originals, images in film, photos in magazines, even holiday snaps.
