"The Red Queen Hypothesis" is a concept in Leigh Van Valen's evolutionary biology in 1973. It says that organisms must constantly evolve to adapt to their environment to survive, and it's named after the Red Queen in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" book. In the story, the Red Queen says, "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to stay in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"
