Two liquid crystals interlace on a microscope slide: adipic acid and cholesteryl acetate. These actual samples were synthesized in the 1970s by the hand of esoteric scientist, Marcel Vogel. Imaged in 2020 by Wonder Science with a DSLR camera and a polarized light microscope. 4096x2160 px, field-of-view 3mm.
Adipic acid is a main precursor for the production of nylon. Cholesteryl acetate has a role as a human metabolite and is also used in cosmetics, wrist watches, thermometers, propane tank volume indicators, video displays, and pharmaceuticals.
Music is a track by Tomer Baruch called Trickle off his album, Subterranean Currents.
Proceeds get shared with my musical collaborators. And 10% will be donated to a carbon-offset program.
