The undisputed giants of the animal kingdom, the African Elephant. Embodying strength, wisdom and power while being among one of the most gentle, humble and majestic creatures on earth.

Elephant tribal relationships are similar to the relationships rooted in the African culture. These relationships value community, respect and kinship which is what I was raised on coming from an African household. Knowing and honouring your roots has always been deeply embedded in us, no matter where you're from. Our roots are the moral foundation of our history and identity.

To me, Roots also means “The Beginning”. When I created this painting, it was the beginning of a pivotal moment in my art career. This painting of an elephant with an ear shaped like Africa had brought me more recognition than any of the hundreds of paintings in my entire catalogue. I’ve never painted anything like it. I hope you love it just as much as I do.

There are 54 editions of Roots, in respect of the number of countries there are in Africa.
