I hardly know anyone here. The turnover these days in our business is so high you almost see a new face everyday. Everyone trying to earn enough just to make it to next month. Most people wouldn’t understand our line of work. Actually, most people hate what we do. They tried to shut us down and clean up the area but what can I say? Sex sells so there will always be a place for us I think. In any case, these impromptu get togethers are as much about pure entertainment as a time to swap industry stories. You see, when you’re out scouting girls daily there are no shortage of good stories. One of the nightclub owners told me that in the past scouts could just charm a girl enough to get her to fall in love and sponge of of them as long as they were in the industry. What a time that would have been. Nowadays, we still get paid but also have to reply to her customers on Line, handle business emails, make a breakfast that looks great on Instagram, and post to her social media accounts as if she’s doing it herself! Some may say it’s not honourable but sure beats being a salaryman. I mean, who do you think has the better stories to tell?

Anyone who has spent the most minimal time in this country will instantly appreciate how Japan is a land of stark contrasts. For every push into the future there are remnants of the past seemingly at every turn. Skyscrapers are being built next to shrines and fancy Michelin star restaurants are surrounded by vintage izakaya drinking pubs. Japan, as the worlds most ageing society, has always had its eyes on the future but its feet firmly planted in its nostalgic past.

This contrast leads to a wealth of photographic opportunity. And as a photographer with a keen interest in deep culture I wouldn't want to be photographing anywhere else!

There's a story attached to every photo I show here. Mostly fictional, but also mostly from my own experiences in Japan over the years. In this series my aim was to capture and edit in a way that portrays modern day Japan but in a style that gives it a time-honoured classic feel.
