From a young age, graffiti always spoke to me. To me graffiti artists were outlaws who made art in the riskiest way possible, society thought of them as delinquents but I thought they were heroes. I too began to write, but would often express my feelings rather than having a “tag”. Later on after I became a photographer I began to paint graffiti over my photos, as a way of communicating things to myself and those around me. For this piece I kind of have been using the words on the walls to make sense of the death of my best friend, and I always imagined that she didn’t want to die, that she just wanted to be numb and I could’ve saved her.

A series created based on my experience hiding my mental illness and drug addiction, the balloons represent the facade I carry with me everywhere I go. Making this series has been an awakening for me that being my true self as an artist is the only way to truly be successful in this space, and that the facade will just bring me down. This series inspired me to be me, even if that’s not always a smiley face
