Part of understanding the art is understanding the filters through which the subject matter was found. Specifically, there is the original Mark Rothko painted piece, then the photograph of the piece, then digitization, color and size adjustments, and subsequent compression of the photograph for use online (different images of the same Rothko work yield wildly different color and size variations), then I choose one, sample the colors and begin building up the colors and forms based on the image on the screen in front of me. The result is what I call a Rothkode, or, an original piece based on the progressive filtering via technical means.

In some instances, I'll go a step further and create physical paintings based on the digital Rothkodes. Seven such pieces were displayed and sold at a gallery show called 'Versions' in February and March of 2019 at the Lewis/Carnegie Gallery in Austin Texas.

Image created by hand in vector format based on a photograph found via online search for 'Rothko Painting.'
