About the Photo:

Emilie was invited to shoot in the abandoned ruins of the Female Inmate Wards of Wolston Park Hospital in Queensland, Australia, as the owners of the grounds felt that she would represent the forgotten inmates and their ghosts. Wolston Park opened its doors in 1865 and would go on to become one of Australia's most notorious lunatic asylums well into the 20th century, renowned for its unspeakable abuses of the largely un-insane women and girls who were incarcerated there, many to their deaths. Upon arriving at the asylum ruins, Emilie communed with the spirits and learned that they wanted their power back. She channeled their cries for freedom into each pose—the shoot resulted in the cover for her album "Fight Like A Girl," as well as this image and many others which have never yet been shown.

Wolston Park and the inmates it tortured are just one real-life example of the horror depicted in Emilie's best-selling historical fantasy novel, The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls.
