Pillar No. 11 Keyword: Balance Amazingly I have been obsessed with the concept of balance for the past years; It’s how I found his way back to practicing my religion and that is why I was ecstatic to learn about my keyword. Balance for me is trying to exist in the middle of two extremes; The pairing of two opposites to create a balanced outcome.
Visual Inspiration: I took inspiration from ancient Greek pottery art style: Red-figure pottery to portray the classic contrasting of colors; black and white as well as the simplicity of the visual style to portray a deep meaning.
Visual Meaning: I infused a lot of imagery of opposites that exist around community, family, and individual to link the theme of balance in everyday struggle to survive. A big portion of the imagery was also inspired by Quranic scriptures such as found in Quran 30:21-24.
"And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find tranquility in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect. And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colors. Verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge. And among His Signs is the sleep that you take by night and by day, and your seeking of His Bounty. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who listen. And among His Signs is that He shows you the lightning, by way of fear and hope, and He sends down water (rain) from the sky, and therewith revives the earth after its death. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who understand". [Qur'an 30:21-24]
