Quilla is not trapped in the prison, she can come and go, but while her brother is not free neither is she. She is his reflection, they are linked, they are the sun and the moon. At night she dreams of her brother in prison, that he will never get out, as the moon she watches over him. She is his connection to time, to the seasons. As Inti has daydreams and nightmares and gets lost in the monotony of the prison, Quilla is his connection to the outside, to family and to time. Mama Quilla (Quechua mama mother, killa moon, “Mother Moon”, hispanicized spelling Mama Quilla), in Inca mythology and religion, was the third power and goddess of the moon. She was the Sister and Wife of Inti, Daughter of Viracocha and Mother of Manco Cápac and Mama Uqllu (Mama Ocllo), mythical founders of the Inca empire and culture.

Concept by Violeta Ayala. Costume design by Maria Corvera. Illustrated in VR by Rilda Paco. Animation by Roly Elias.

PRISON X collection image

The eccentric deity the Jaguaress greets you at the velvet curtain, the gateway between theatre and lived experience. She casts you as Inti, a young man who dreamed of being the Sun God, (son of Viracocha, the maker of time), but ended up in Prison.

Inside the world of Prison X, you relinquish control over reality, as you embody one of the characters in the Jaguaress’ story where you have to coexist with devils, saints, corrupt prison guards and even a western filmmaker. Prison X is a mythological journey inside the dreams and nightmares of the Neo-Andean underworld.

Prison X premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2021 to critical acclaim and will premiere in Europe at Cannes XR.
