Juki does not pretend to attract attention, he prefers to follow the rules, stay out of trouble. He embraces a society that shows deep indifference for him. Despite his humiliating situation, Juki resists insults and injustices. He perceives himself as a simple, honest and hardworking person.

Juki was caught working in a cocaine factory and sent to prison without a trial. Juki meets Inti when he arrives in prison and they become friends. Juki is the prison’s cleaner and knows all its secrets, he’s the only one that walks through the prison at dawn, sweeping while everyone is asleep. He tries to clean the devil’s altar quietly, but because he’s deaf he makes so much noise he wakes the Devil.

The devil rages that his trial will never happen because he makes too much noise. Juki runs to his tiny room and puts on his jukumari mask when suddenly his alarm clock rings and he realizes it was a nightmare.

Juki is given a camera by Dan Magpie and starts filming his days in the prison. He sees the camera as an opportunity to make some cash to pay for a lawyer.

Juki’s limbs are not those of a human, they are of a bear (The Jukimara, the Andean bear). His legs are the legs of a bear with paws at the bottom. Because of these physical characteristics, Juki has limited abilities to do his job delicately. He is careful but unable to control his animal limbs, which are terribly incompatible with his work.

Concept by Violeta Ayala. Costume design by Maria Corvera. Illustrated in VR by Rilda Paco. Animation by Roly Elias.

PRISON X collection image

The eccentric deity the Jaguaress greets you at the velvet curtain, the gateway between theatre and lived experience. She casts you as Inti, a young man who dreamed of being the Sun God, (son of Viracocha, the maker of time), but ended up in Prison.

Inside the world of Prison X, you relinquish control over reality, as you embody one of the characters in the Jaguaress’ story where you have to coexist with devils, saints, corrupt prison guards and even a western filmmaker. Prison X is a mythological journey inside the dreams and nightmares of the Neo-Andean underworld.

Prison X premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2021 to critical acclaim and will premiere in Europe at Cannes XR.
