Dan Magpie is a filmmaker from Sydney and ended up in the prison trying to make a documentary. His appearance gives away his character. He is tall and skinny; his legs look like two wires and he wears black and white. The magpie, his ’Totem’ given to him while taking Ayahuasca, is a source of great pride, but involuntarily reflects signs of superiority. He wears typical Australian boots (Blundstones) and a chuspa (bag) that he bought at a souvenir market (made in China). He also wears a poncho on which is written “Better Than Yours” that he bought in one of the hippest stores in Melbourne, and it seemed like an excellent idea to take to Bolivia. His hands are tweezers and with those he manipulates his camera, he desperately wants to win an Oscar.
Concept by Violeta Ayala. Costume design by Maria Corvera. Illustrated in VR by Rilda Paco. Animation by Roly Elias.
The eccentric deity the Jaguaress greets you at the velvet curtain, the gateway between theatre and lived experience. She casts you as Inti, a young man who dreamed of being the Sun God, (son of Viracocha, the maker of time), but ended up in Prison.
Inside the world of Prison X, you relinquish control over reality, as you embody one of the characters in the Jaguaress’ story where you have to coexist with devils, saints, corrupt prison guards and even a western filmmaker. Prison X is a mythological journey inside the dreams and nightmares of the Neo-Andean underworld.
Prison X premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2021 to critical acclaim and will premiere in Europe at Cannes XR.
