I’m not sure in which category of street photography I fit best, or even if my work can be seen as street photography. But then, I don’t care much about labels and boxes, if I’m honest with you. It’s all a very intuitive process for me. I look for ordinary, simple life moments. The ones that pass by without us even noticing. Most of the time, I go for almost empty spaces - probably because, personally, I’m not too comfortable with crowds. I don’t use flash and I don’t get on people’s faces, possibly connected to the fact that I don’t enjoy being in the spotlight and maybe they don’t to - and also because I think it’s disrespectful. I love candid shots, so I do my best to not interfere with the scene. Even when I’m working with portraits (studio or outdoors), I don’t give much direction to the people. And I feel that the best shots I’ve taken are the ones that were not posed. As in life, my photography approach is about being spontaneous, in an attempt to make the viewer relate to it simply because it’s a life moment. Our lives.

As I mentioned in ‘Barcelona’, everything felt perfect when walking around the city’s old town. The harsh light hitting the fantastic architecture and the shadows created by it. I just couldn’t stop. And within a few minutes from that shot. A diagonal line. A silhouette of a man taking a break. A fleeting, candid moment. You might have seen these elements before.

Cheers to the ones that came before me and made history capturing life as it happens. Fan Ho, Bresson, Ernst Haas, just to name a few of my favourites. Cheers to the ones that are picking up their cameras today to show their vision to the world, especially if they are doing it for the very first time. I hope you find the same joy that I do when I pick up mine. Embrace the journey!

Photographing on the streets is about creating on the go, embracing the unexpected. Moving forward, every new angle is a brand new story. It’s about adapting to change all the time, being it in the light, in the dark or in the middle of both. Just like life itself.

Chasing Shadows is a collection of 18 photographs minted on the blockchain between March and October, 2021.
