For my first visit to America, I chose one of the street photography capitals of the world: NYC. Being from Sao Paolo, I was very familiar with the ‘concrete jungle’ kind of feeling. But New York was next level. The buildings are so tall and streets relatively narrow, so the sunlight doesn’t reach everywhere, despite being a hot & bright summer day.

I was walking around the Wall Street area, but trying to stay away from the most visited spots - I always try to get more of the routine type of feeling from the city I visit, instead of just shooting the well known locations. Williams Str and Exchange, that was the corner. I could see the tall building in the background and the light slowly changing, darkening the street and hitting its upper floors. People coming and going with their business and that was NYC for me. Busy, busy, busy, non-stop.

I was almost leaving, but still wanted to capture that sense of scale and how the shadows were taking over everything, like there was no escape. All of a sudden, this man entered the frame and I was certain his was my subject. Anonymous, walking towards that building with his luggage. It didn’t take long for him to disappear in the shade, and I wondered if that was a normal day or a new start for him. No matter what, I hope he didn't stay in the shadow for too long.

Photographing on the streets is about creating on the go, embracing the unexpected. Moving forward, every new angle is a brand new story. It’s about adapting to change all the time, being it in the light, in the dark or in the middle of both. Just like life itself.
