It was my last day in Amsterdam (out of 4). I was going through a rough moment in my personal life (you can ask me in private, I’ll tell you the story) and photography was the perfect escape. But despite my excitement in discovering a new city, I was feeling very uninspired. Plus, the weather was cloudy or rainy or just very boring during my stay. It was a moment that I wanted to explore shadows and light, so I was frustrated by not being able to do it.

But the sun came out on that last day. Just next to my hotel, there were these 2 bridges parallel to each other. And then everything changed for me. I saw that angled, streak of light and tons of cyclists passing by. To many, Amsterdam is considered the bicycle capital of the world, so I knew I wanted to have that in the frame. And I chose this photo in particular as it shows how people in the city do everything in their bikes. What were these rolls of paper? Was it work related? A plan? Drawings? Paintings? Drafts of something? Or just plain, blank canvas, ready to be filled up with anything? I will never know. But that moment in the light certainly inspired me to keep the journey going.

Photographing on the streets is about creating on the go, embracing the unexpected. Moving forward, every new angle is a brand new story. It’s about adapting to change all the time, being it in the light, in the dark or in the middle of both. Just like life itself.

Unlockable Content: a high resolution digital contact sheet (7964 × 5200) that shows frames before and after the photo was taken + high resolution file of the selected photo.
