After Fischer failed to show up for the world championship match, Anatoly Karpov (born 1951) became the 12th world chess champion. He subsequently justified his title win with countless brilliant tournament victories. He fought epic battles against Viktor Korchnoi and Garry Kasparov for the world title from 1978 to 1990.
