World Champion 1963-69
Tigran Petrosian became the 9th World Champion after defeating defending champion Mikhail Botvinnik in 1963. His style was characterized by masterful defense. In 1969 he lost the title to Boris Spassky. Petrosian still remained one of the best players in the world for a long time and took part in the fight for the world championship several more times.
