World Champion 1957-58

Vasily Smyslov defeated Mikhail Botvinnik at the second attempt in 1957 and thus became the 7th world champion in chess history. Botvinnik regained the title the following year in a rematch. After that Smyslov belonged to the absolute world elite for many years. Smyslov was a baritone opera singer and it is said that he chose a serious chess career after a failed audition with the Bolshoi Theatre in 1950.

Based on the game Paul Keres - Vassily Smyslov.
