As the world largest Buddhist temple in Central Java, Borobudur holds a complete collection of Buddhist reliefs. This monument is a model of the universe and built as a sacred place for them. It's also a place of pilgrimage. Every year, Buddhist in Indonesia and overseas gather to celebrate Vesak Day at the monument.

Borobudur was likely founded around 800 AD. This corresponds to the period between 760 and 830 AD, the peak of the Sailendra dynasty rule over Mataram kingdom in central Java. The construction for this monument has been estimated to have taken 75 years. It's been restored and reconstructed due to the abandonment for centuries under layers of volcanic ash and jungle growth. Until today, it's been Indonesia's single most visited monument and also tourist attraction.
