Novamrem is a work which identifies with the transition of art from the traditional age to the digital age. In the so-called new Renaissance of digital art, the traditional world is not rejected, but accepted, enhanced and augmented. Novamrem shows how traditional modes of painting are translated to a digital alter-ego using Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence. It is also a play on the concept of "Reality". On the one side we see traditional modes of painting without any realism, painting just patches and on the other side we see the realistic alter-ego but in augmented reality. The question asked are "how do we embrace the new by not only learning from the past, but embracing, enhancing and augmenting it?" "What is reality- a subjective interpretation or existence itself?"
This work was created as part of Fabin's year-long investigation into the future of digital brushes using technological advancements like AI, AR etc. The work explored multiple means of creation using AI algorithms like pix2pix, GauGAN etc. The process of Novamrem involved extracting the hand-painted patches using computer vision algorithms and software, then processing it through GauGAN and finally Augmenting the processed feed back onto the original video. Novamrem became popular in social media platforms (https://twitter.com/fabinrasheed/status/1191255610479669248?s=20) when the video was released and was shared by multiple industry and creative experts. But more interestingly, it created a debate on traditional modes of creative expression, the possibility of AI taking over creativity and future modes of creative expressions.
Novamrem was created as part of the AI Brushes project (https://www.nurecas.com/ai-brushes) which was exhibited at Art Electronica 2020, CADAF 2020, Raritan Gallery 2019, ReWork AI Summit 2020, RunwayML creators gallery 2019. This work was notable not just for its creative process or expression, but also for the existential debate that it inspired.
