"The Mammoth Surprise" is part of the "Sustain" series. In my series “Sustain” I share my commitment to living a more sustainable lifestyle. I grow produce in my urban organic garden and photograph the planting, harvesting and enjoyment of the produce. The aesthetic I use references the 20th century Victory Garden movement when Americans grew in urban plots 60% of produce consumed, because I would love to see this happen again except in service of maintaining a sustainable climate! I planted an heirloom beet variety called Mammoth Red Mangel just for fun to see what would happen. I was so surprised by how much bigger these beets grew compared to the normal ones you can see in my basket that it inspired me to create this work of art to share my delight!
The EVERY WOMAN BIENNIAL is a celebration of: uplifting women, non-binary artists, creating opportunities, encouragement, connection, community, inspiration and love. Bringing together established artists alongside hundreds of emerging artists, some showing for the first time. The Biennial launched in NYC in 2014 by founder C. Finley, originally under the name, The Whitney Houston Biennial, as a way to provide a platform and exposure for more female artists.
