Interiors Project Description:
Living in New York City during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was a surreal experience that left thousands questioning, ‘what’s next?’. The grocery stores were depleted, the bustling streets now empty, and many of us were getting let go from our jobs as industries started to shut down.
It was announced on March 21, 2020, that the city officially started Phase One of lockdown, allowing only essential workers to report to their jobs and the rest of us to practice socially distancing at home until further notice. Being complacent is not a typical practice for someone living in the city, especially since the apartments are infamously known for being tiny with virtually no outdoor space.
I decided I needed a way to document this experience, as well as to create a daily ritual that would help me keep track of time during this stillness. Every day I would photograph my partner and I inside our apartment at our new favorite hangout spot, the couch, and write down the date and time in order to keep track of what day it was. These photos allowed me a way to internalize what was going on, and to reassure that I was doing all I could in this situation to help no matter how dull it was at times.
This work subtly displays the emotions of what it was like during those eighty days it took the city to leave Phase One and progress into Phase Two. Repetition within the interiors of our home was how many of us helped fight the virus. It was a time to reflect, learn, and enjoy the simple joys that life can bring in the most mundane situations.
