A storm was brewing. The smell of ozone, a pungent yet sweet aroma, filled the air. As I stood on the ledge overlooking Moraine Lake, I saw the clouds, heavy and gray, ominously gathering. But the water was calm, an eerie sort of calm, providing a false sense of comfort with its still waters, a mesmerizing blue, like a witch’s cauldron, complete with a calming reflection of the mountains above. As I looked out over the landscape, the gray clouds above and calm, enchanting waters below created a captivating duality in moods. I wanted to capture this dramatic, yet serene feeling, highlighting the intensity of the building event. After I shot this image complete with its storm clouds and still reflection, the sky opened up and heavy rain poured down. I came back drenched in water but happy that I captured the moment of build-up.
