This is a sister piece to Calm Overcomes Heat. I shot this not knowing why I felt so drawn to it. Looking at it now, this feels like the other side of the little world Calm Overcomes Heat captured. It is darker, and even though it shows more area than its sister piece it somehow manages to feel lonelier, almost apocalyptic. When I was younger I struggled with depression quite a lot and often contemplated suicide but what kept me from it was the hope of tomorrow; that perhaps tomorrow I wouldn't feel as bad or that I could learn to live and smile in earnest. Know the World Before the Door. That's exactly how I've lived my life. I want to experience all that I can before I walk through the door that leads from this world to the next.
Recalled Red is a series of works shot on 120mm rolls of Cinestill 800T film. The rolls were recalled due to the chemical imbalance that gives these images their warm overcast. This series is very personal to me. The red, orange, and yellow tones of the works, instead of representing their usual feelings of warmth and friendliness, explore the colder sentiments of isolation, the nostalgia of so-dreamt “better days”, and ambivalence towards life in the present and future that I’ve often struggled with. I hope that viewing this series presents you with a moment of respite and eases the passing of time for you as shooting it did for me.
