Roma Amkie. Frame# 4. 2020. Acrylic, canvac. 230 x 230 см.

A series of works "Crop" raises the issue of the impossibility of conveying an artistic statement to the viewer. Rethinking the theses expressed by Ludwig Wittgenstein regarding language, the author transfers them to the language of visual storytelling.

Due to the widespread use of social networks and instant messengers, visual images (stickers, emojis, memes) have become an integral part of our communication. That is why in his works the author uses characters as a collective visual image. The style of the characters friendly hints that it is not worth peering into the depths of one canvas, but invites you to look wider and see what really serves as a statement.

The tetraptych from the series "Crop" was presented at the solo exhibition of the artist Roma Amkie with the same name in August 2021. With his works, the author tries to convey a deep personal experience, but the viewer will still experience different emotions, because our perception of reality will always be different. Roma Amkie (born 1990) is a young artist and graphic designer with graffiti background. Over the past few years, Roma Amkie has been studying philosophy and it’s found reflection in his works. Artist is fascinated by the study of cognitive distortions that lead to the insularity of subjective perception of a person and objective reality. Roma Amkie was born in the Urals in 1990. In 2007 he began to make graffiti. In 2011 and 2013 he took part in the international Street Art festival "Stenography". Since 2013 he lives and works in St. Petersburg. Since 2014 he has been working on creating his own characters in the style “Superflat”. The artist experiments with the form using various materials: canvas, plywood, glass and fabric. In 2014, 2016 and 2018, he was a participant in group exhibitions and festivals (Museum of Modern Art ARTMUZA, Sergey Kuryokhin Contemporary Art Center). Since 2019 he has been researching the problem of insularity of subjective human perception and objective reality, working on a new series of works called "Frame". In August 2021 Roma Amkie presented the solo exhibition "Crop" at 3120 Gallery. In this project artist raised the problem of cognitive distortions and communication between people (and also between the artist and the viewer) and presented multi-format works with characters, which he refers to as collective visual images.
