02.Kumamoto Castle/Kumamoto

Kumamoto Castle was built in 1607 (Keicho 12) by Kiyomasa Kato, who was regarded as a master builder of castles. As the symbol of Kumamoto, it is loved by many people and is one of the three most famous castles in Japan. The current castle tower was reconstructed in 1960, but there are still some spots where you can feel the 400 years of history of Kumamoto Castle. One of the features of Kumamoto Castle is that it has various defensive functions for warfare. It is especially famous for its "Shinobikageshi," a steep stone wall that bends back to prevent enemies from entering the castle, but it also has underground passages, facilities for siege, and many other innovations. The castle tower was damaged by the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016, with roof tiles and ornamental ornamental shachi tiles falling from the top floor and the stone walls of the basement collapsing. Today, the castle is being restored as a symbol of Kumamoto's recovery from the earthquake by using traditional techniques and incorporating the latest technology to prepare for earthquakes.

02番　熊本城/熊本県

熊本城は、築城の名手と謳われた加藤清正によって1607年(慶長12年)に築城されました。熊本のシンボルとして多くの人に親しまれ、日本三名城のひとつにも数えられます。現在の天守閣は1960年に外観復元されたものですが往年の面影を残すスポットもあり、築城から約400年に渡る熊本城の歴史が感じられます。 熊本城の特徴は、戦を想定したさまざま防衛機能を備えていること。敵の侵入を防ぐための大きく反り返った急勾配の石垣「忍び返し(しのびがえし)」が特に有名ですが、その他、地下通路があったり、籠城が可能な設備を備えていたりと、色々な工夫がされています。 2016年の熊本地震により最上階の瓦や鯱瓦の落下、地下室石垣の崩落といった被害を受けた天守閣。現在は伝統の技術を用いつつ地震に備えた最新技術も取り入れ、熊本地震の復興のシンボルとして復旧が進んでいます。
