Play to Earn Takes Over is an artwork that takes inspiration from Super Mario Bros 3, but gaming has changed. Play to Earn is taking over, giving more power and ownership to gamers thanks to blockchain technology.

Ben Haley used polymer clay, paint and digital pixel animations to create an unique decoration for the first Play to Earn Game Festival in November 2020. The Metaverse of Play to Earn is a tribute to the metaverse and blockchain gaming, something that binds all virtual worlds together.

Portrayed are all the games that participated in the event. Each of them has a place here, because they all allow gamers to create value. This value can be kept for further fun and games, or sold to the highest bidder. That type of ownership has slowly been taken away from gamers as digital downloads paved the way for complicated EULA and ToS documents. Nowadays gamers only license a game, and gamers are just cash cows.

Super Mario Bros 3 was a game you could actually own. Having a boxed version in mint condition in your closet can now earn you hundreds of dollars. However, a digital download of any modern game has no actual value. These games, portrayed in this artwork, are at the forefront of a new age of gaming. Player empowerment, digital ownership and player-driven economies will flourish in the coming years. We are setting the stage of things to come!
