This series, titled “Planet of Artists”, has been created by the artist Huang Zhan-Wen since 2012. It is presented in the form of vector graphics and serves as documentation of outstanding artists from Paul Cézanne to the present day.
The philosophical significance of this body of work involves the deconstruction of contemporary art history from its foundation, transcending time, backgrounds, and geography. It reinterprets artists throughout art history by unifying each artist into an equally sized artistic symbol, regardless of the artist's societal influence.
This represents a societal practice challenging the Matthew Effect. The collection of this series offers three aspects of art appreciation: an appreciation for the renowned artist, pure admiration for the artwork, or an appreciation for the expressive form of semiotics.
Huang Zhan-Wen, a distinguished alumnus of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, has been a compelling force in the contemporary art scene since his graduation in 2006. With a career that spans over a decade and a half, Zhan-Wen has not only made significant contributions through his art but has also played a pivotal role in art education. In 2010, committed to nurturing the next generation of artists, he established WE music studio, a professional music and art education team.
Zhan-Wen's artistic journey is marked by a series of solo exhibitions that showcase his evolution as an artist and his exploration of diverse themes and mediums. From his early work "True Colour" in 2007 to the more recent "Thinking is Form" in 2023, his exhibitions in Singapore reflect a deep engagement with the visual and thematic possibilities of art.
Zhan-Wen also participated in many international art exhibitions and festival like the "2nd International ART EXPO MALAYSIA" in 2008 to the "Design Week - 751 International Design Festival" in Beijing, China. These exhibitions not only provided platforms for dialogue and exchange but also affirmed his status as an artist of international repute.
