The NFTs in this collection are actual glitches produced by the OpenSea site itself and captured by the artist as they occurred in real time and turned into an abstract artwork. The ‘Operational Glitch’ Collection is part of the ‘Epistemic Glitch’ series based on Marcelo de Melo’s own PhD research in Art Practice, focusing on the importance of mosaic principles for digital aesthetics and the epistemic significance of glitches. The artist interrogates regimes of visibility by foregrounding an aesthetics of digital structure that highlights digital discontinuity, which is a direct consequence of the Byzantine mode of representation centered around mosaic practice. Furthermore, this collection focus on ‘technological failure’ such as the operational glitches produced by OpenSea, which are traces of digital processes that can be observed on the surface of the image revealing mosaic principles of image making applied to code and current technologies.
